Unidentified individuals spark political debate in Karachi with slogans calling for federal or military intervention.

Karachi has witnessed a sudden surge in wall chalking across key areas like Liaquatabad, North Nazimabad, and Hyderi Market, with slogans demanding that the city be placed under federal or military control. These messages, appearing late Monday night (January 26) and into Tuesday, have deepened political tensions in a city already reeling from the devastating Gul Plaza fire that claimed over 70 lives.

The graffiti, which includes phrases like “Karachi ko wafaq ke hawalay karo” (Hand Karachi over to the federation), surfaced shortly after MQM-P leader Mustafa Kamal publicly demanded federal intervention under Articles 148 and 149 of the Constitution. While the wall chalking has gone viral on social media, no political party has officially claimed responsibility for the midnight activity. Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the matter to identify those behind the slogans, which some analysts suggest may be an attempt by various groups to signal dissent amidst the city’s ongoing governance crisis.
