In a significant judicial intervention, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered an urgent medical review of former Prime Minister Imran Khan following reports that he has lost approximately 85% of his vision in his right eye.

Critical Medical Findings

The report submitted to the Supreme Court by Advocate Salman Safdar, who was appointed as amicus curiae (friend of the court), details a severe deterioration in the PTI founder’s health:

  • Diagnosis: Khan has been diagnosed with Right Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO), a serious condition caused by a blood clot that blocks the main vein carrying blood away from the retina.
  • Current Vision Status: Currently, the former premier retains only 15% vision in the affected eye.
  • Timeline of Decline: According to the report, Khan had normal 6/6 vision as recently as October 2025. He began experiencing blurred vision shortly thereafter, which he claims was repeatedly ignored by jail authorities.
  • Previous Procedures: Khan underwent a medical procedure at PIMS Hospital in Islamabad on January 24, where he received an anti-VEGF intravitreal injection. However, the report states this intervention was delayed and has not restored his sight.

Supreme Court Directives

A two-member bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan resumed the hearing on February 12, 2026, and issued the following orders:

  • Medical Board: The court directed the government to form a medical board of expert ophthalmologists to conduct a comprehensive examination of Khan’s eye before February 16, 2026.
  • Personal Physicians: The bench instructed authorities to allow Khan access to his personal doctors for consultation.
  • Family Communication: In addition to medical care, the court ordered that Khan be allowed to speak with his sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, via telephone.
