In a landmark development for Pakistan’s green energy sector, Mega Motor Company (MMC), the official partner of BYD, has signed a strategic financing agreement with British International Investment (BII). This long-term funding supports the establishment of Pakistan’s first purpose-built, large-scale New Energy Vehicle (NEV) manufacturing plant, located near Port Qasim, Karachi.

Key Highlights of the Mega Project

  • British Funding: BII will provide significant long-term foreign currency financing, covering 25% of the total project cost, estimated at approximately $150 million.
  • Launch Timeline: The state-of-the-art facility is currently under construction and is scheduled to go live in the second half of 2026 (specifically around July or August).
  • Production Capacity: The plant is designed for world-class automation and will initially have a capacity to produce 25,000 units per year on a double shift.
  • Environmental Impact: By promoting the shift to NEVs, the project aims to avoid an estimated 165,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2034, contributing to improved air quality in major urban centers.
  • Job Creation: This greenfield investment is expected to create over 1,100 new direct jobs and thousands of indirect employment opportunities in manufacturing, distribution, and after-sales services.
  • Energy Infrastructure: To support the high-demand industrial operations, a dedicated 5MW power connection (scalable to 7.5MW) has been secured through an agreement with K-Electric.

Economic and Strategic Benefits

CEO of MMC, Aly Khan, emphasized that this collaboration lays the foundation for a globally competitive NEV ecosystem in Pakistan. The transition to locally assembled electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles is expected to reduce the national oil import bill while enabling technology transfer and a resilient industrial value chain.
