In a major move to empower the strategic port city, the federal government has approved a cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to provide 100% reliable and uninterrupted electricity to Gwadar by early 2027. Announced in the Senate on February 27, 2026, this project aims to eliminate the chronic power fluctuations and supply gaps that have hindered development in the region.

Key Highlights of the New Power Plan

The Battery Solution: The new system utilizes BESS technology combined with low-cost backup generation to stabilize electricity supply for the deep-sea port, desalination plants, and burgeoning industrial zones.
Transition from Coal: Power Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari informed the Senate that the previously planned 300MW coal power plant was replaced with this more viable and modern battery storage solution.
Overcoming Distance Challenges: Gwadar currently faces significant voltage drops due to its 600km distance from the national grid; the BESS will act as a critical local stabilizer to ensure consistent voltage.
Scalability for Growth: The system is initially designed to meet the current 40–50 MW demand, with the inherent capacity to scale up as Gwadar’s industrial footprint expands over the next five years.
