KATI Urges Government to Consult Business Community on Energy Conservation Plans.
KATI energy conservation consultation
The leadership of Pakistan’s largest industrial estate, the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), has issued a formal appeal to the Government of Pakistan to consult the business community before implementing new energy conservation measures. Muhammad Ikram Rajput, President of KATI, warned that unilateral decisions regarding lockdowns or energy rationing could severely impact export sectors already struggling with high production costs.
Industrial and Energy Security Concerns
The business community’s plea comes as regional tensions continue to threaten global energy supplies:
- Middle East Conflict: As the conflict enters its second month, the ongoing Strait of Hormuz crisis has caused a 90% drop in global shipping, creating significant energy supply risks for Pakistan.
- Economic Buffers: While industrial leaders worry about rationing, the grassroots solar movement has already provided some relief, saving the country $12 billion in avoided LNG and oil imports since 2018.
- Inflationary Pressure: These energy concerns are compounded by a sharp jump in monthly inflation to 7.3% in March 2026, the highest level since August 2024, driven largely by the Israel-US-Iran war.
