Pakistan has approved landmark measures and a “Mega Policy” aimed at transforming the country into a Regional Maritime Transshipment Hub. This initiative is designed to revolutionize global trade handling, modernize national infrastructure, and significantly boost foreign exchange earnings.

Key Policy Changes

The new framework introduces specialized handling and increased flexibility across several cargo sectors:

  • Automotive Logistics: Approval has been granted for specialized Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) operations to ensure faster processing for cars and SUVs.
  • Bulk Cargo Expansion: Pakistani ports are now authorized to handle transshipment for bulk commodities, including grains, coal, and minerals.
  • Small Shipment Flexibility: New provisions for Less than Container Load (LCL) shipments provide enhanced support for smaller traders and transit cargo destined for Central Asia.
  • Capturing Diverted Traffic: The policy strategically positions Pakistan to capture a larger share of maritime traffic currently diverting through other regional waters.
