Pakistan emergency LNG tender

Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) has issued its first international spot tender since late 2023 in an emergency effort to address a nationwide energy crisis. The procurement aims to secure three LNG cargoes, each approximately 140,000 cubic meters, to stabilize a national power grid currently facing a 3,400-megawatt shortfall.

Energy Security and Geopolitical Impact

  • Strait of Hormuz Closure: The emergency tender follows the functional closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor, which has severely impacted Pakistan’s energy security.
  • Middle East Conflict: The ongoing regional conflict in the Middle East has exacerbated the power crisis, forcing the government to seek immediate external fuel supplies to mitigate widespread loadshedding.
  • Grid Stabilization: These cargoes are considered a mechanical necessity to prevent further collapse of the national grid and ensure industrial and domestic power continuity.
