PLL Issues Emergency LNG Tender to Combat 3,400MW Shortfall Amid Middle East Conflict.
Pakistan emergency LNG tender
Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) has issued its first international spot tender since late 2023 in an emergency effort to address a nationwide energy crisis. The procurement aims to secure three LNG cargoes, each approximately 140,000 cubic meters, to stabilize a national power grid currently facing a 3,400-megawatt shortfall.
Energy Security and Geopolitical Impact
- Strait of Hormuz Closure: The emergency tender follows the functional closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor, which has severely impacted Pakistan’s energy security.
- Middle East Conflict: The ongoing regional conflict in the Middle East has exacerbated the power crisis, forcing the government to seek immediate external fuel supplies to mitigate widespread loadshedding.
- Grid Stabilization: These cargoes are considered a mechanical necessity to prevent further collapse of the national grid and ensure industrial and domestic power continuity.
