Pakistan is exploring increased energy imports from the United States and financing options for Boeing aircraft as Islamabad seeks to diversify fuel supplies, strengthen bilateral trade and mobilise investment for key economic projects.

The discussions took place during a meeting between Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and US State Department Ambassador Yon on the sidelines of the World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, according to Pakistan’s Finance Ministry.

Energy Security and US EXIM Financing

The two sides reviewed progress towards a bilateral trade framework and discussed expanding energy imports from the United States. Aurangzeb also outlined measures to maintain domestic fuel availability and provide targeted relief to vulnerable consumers amid uncertainty in global energy markets.

The meeting also covered financing opportunities through the US Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and US Export-Import Bank (EXIM). Discussions included potential investment in strategic sectors, cooperation on critical minerals and security arrangements for the Reko Diq mining project in Balochistan.

Commercial Aviation and Fleet Renewal

Boeing aircraft acquisition and financing also featured in the talks, alongside aviation clearances. Pakistan has separately sought US EXIM support for Pakistan International Airlines’ planned fleet expansion, including potential purchases of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, as well as financing for aircraft engines and possible pre-delivery payments.

Pakistan has also discussed obtaining spare parts to return grounded Boeing 777 aircraft to service. The earlier discussions with US EXIM focused on advancing specific transactions while work continued on a broader cooperation framework. However, the latest meeting did not announce a final financing agreement or confirmed aircraft purchase.

Financial Compliance and Sovereign Credit Engagement

Beyond energy and aviation, the discussions included anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing arrangements, follow-up on Financial Action Task Force requirements, digital-asset regulation and potential applications involving remittances and tokenised Eurobonds.

In a separate meeting, Aurangzeb discussed Pakistan’s economic progress and sovereign credit outlook with S&P Global Ratings. He highlighted the country’s September bond issuance, tax collection performance, reserve accumulation and progress under the International Monetary Fund programme, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and structural reforms.

The discussions reflect Pakistan’s efforts to broaden economic cooperation with Washington across trade, energy, aviation and mining. Any resulting financing or import arrangements will depend on further negotiations, commercial assessments and the relevant approvals.
