PM Shehbaz Sharif announces a major Rs 4.04/unit cut in industrial electricity tariffs.

In a decisive move to revive the national economy, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a significant reduction of Rs 4.04 per unit in electricity prices for the industrial sector on Friday, January 30, 2026. Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad honoring top exporters, the PM stated that this relief is designed to lower production costs, bolster exports, and restore the competitiveness of Pakistani products in the global market.

Key Financial & Industrial Reforms:

  • Electricity Tariff Cut: The base industrial electricity tariff has been slashed from Rs 33.58 to Rs 29.18 per unit.
  • Wheeling Charges Reduction: To enable industries to sell surplus power to neighboring units, wheeling charges have been reduced to less than Rs 9 per kWh.
  • Export Refinance Scheme: The mark-up rate on export refinance has been slashed by 300 basis points, bringing it down from 7.5% to 4.5%.
  • Blue Passports: Top-performing exporters will be awarded “Blue Passports” for two years, recognizing them as “ambassadors-at-large” for Pakistan.
  • Transparent Reforms: The PM highlighted the transparent, live-broadcast privatization of PIA and a strategic shift toward reducing direct taxes as part of a broader business-friendly agenda.

Federal Minister for Power Division, Sardar Awais Leghari, noted that the cross-subsidy burden on industrial bills, which was previously Rs 8.90 per unit, has now been reduced to zero, bringing electricity costs down to approximately 11.5 cents per unit.
