Panic in Abbottabad: 17 Nursing Students Hospitalized After Toxic Gas Exposure.
At least 17 female students were hospitalized after inhaling toxic fumes in their classroom in Abbottabad.
A serious safety incident occurred at the Government Nursing School (Public Health School/LHV) in Abbottabad on Friday, January 30, 2026. At least 17 female students lost consciousness or fell ill after a pungent, toxic odour filled their classroom during study hours.
Key Details of the Incident:
- Immediate Symptoms: Affected students reported severe nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and extreme difficulty in breathing before collapsing in the classroom.
- Emergency Medical Care: The victims were rushed to Ayub Teaching Hospital (ATH) by the college administration and rescue teams for urgent treatment.
- Hospital Status: Medical Director Prof. Dr. Saqib Malik confirmed that one student was admitted to the Medical ICU, two to the CCU, and one to the general ward, while 13 were kept under emergency observation. Five students were initially reported to be in critical condition.
- The Cause & Controversy: Sui Gas authorities claimed that only a “routine chemical” (odorant) was added to the supply to detect leaks. However, hospital officials maintained that the severity of the students’ reactions points to a more toxic chemical exposure.
- Investigation: Sui Gas technical teams, led by General Manager Rehmatullah, are investigating if an internal leak or fumes from a nearby industrial wastewater drain caused the buildup of toxic gas in the classroom.
Sui Gas officials have confirmed that the building has since been checked to rule out further leakages, and most students are now reported to be stable and out of danger.
