Beyond Boundaries: CM Maryam Nawaz Offers Full Support to Karachi After Tragic Gul Plaza Inferno.
Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz expresses "heartbreaking" sorrow over 79 lives lost in Karachi's Gul Plaza fire.
In a powerful gesture of national unity, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has expressed her deepest sorrow over the tragic fire at Karachi’s Gul Plaza on January 17-21, 2026. Describing the incident as “heartbreaking,” she emphasized that during such difficult times, provincial boundaries do not matter, and the people of Karachi are not alone in their mourning.
Impact of the Tragedy:
- Fatalities: The devastating blaze claimed at least 79 precious lives, many of whom were trapped on the mezzanine floor due to locked emergency exits and narrow staircases.
- The Cause: Investigations revealed the fire started in an artificial flower shop on the ground floor, accidentally triggered by children playing with matches.
- A National Disaster: The Sindh government classified the fire as a Grade 3 emergency and a “national tragedy”.
Punjab’s Proactive Response:
- Offer of Assistance: The Chief Minister has officially extended an offer of full cooperation to the Sindh government, including medical aid and technical expertise to help victims recover.
- Province-wide Safety Audit: To prevent similar disasters, CM Maryam has ordered a comprehensive fire safety audit across Punjab, mandating the installation of 1,157 water hydrants and smoke detectors in all multi-storey commercial buildings.
- Strict Enforcement: She has given a 30-day deadline for all commercial plazas in Punjab to install fire hydrants and ensure that emergency exits remain unblocked.
- Technical Collaboration: A specialized team from Punjab’s Urban Search and Research Force has already joined the Sindh Police in Karachi to assist with the investigation using advanced technology.
CM Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed that Punjab stands ready to support Karachi, stating, “Our government becomes one unit at the time of any emergency”.
