Cultural Revival: Lahore prepares for Basant as CM Maryam Nawaz announces a 4-day long weekend.

In a move that has sparked immense excitement across the province, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a massive four-day long weekend for Punjab. The extended break starts with Kashmir Solidarity Day on Thursday, February 5, followed by a special provincial holiday for the Basant Festival on Friday, February 6, leading into the regular Saturday and Sunday weekend.

Basant’s Grand Return to Lahore:

  • The Revival: After nearly 18 to 20 years, the kite-flying festival officially returns to Lahore from February 6 to 8, 2026.
  • Controlled Festivities: Kite flying is permitted only within the territorial limits of Lahore District and under strict safety conditions.
  • Strict SOPs: Only cotton strings (pinnah) are allowed; metallic, chemical, and nylon strings are strictly prohibited and can lead to 5–7 years of imprisonment.
  • Aviation Safety: Kite flying is banned in areas near the Allama Iqbal International Airport approach paths, including DHA Blocks R, S, and Q, and Nishat Colony.
  • Public Facilitation: The Punjab government has announced free travel on the Metro Bus, Orange Line, and Speedo buses in Lahore during the festival days.
  • Safety Measures: One million safety rods are being provided free of cost to motorcyclists to prevent injuries from kite strings.

Cultural and Economic Buzz: The historic Mochi Gate and Rang Mahal markets are witnessing an unprecedented rush, with kite prices reportedly doubling due to high demand. CM Maryam Nawaz encouraged citizens to use this time to “relax, recharge, and enjoy quality moments with their families” while celebrating responsibly.
