Strategic Milestone: Air India Express projected to hit its first operating profit in H2 FY26 under Tata Group.

In a significant turnaround since its acquisition by the Tata Group in 2022, Air India Express is projected to achieve its first operating profit in the second half of the current fiscal year (H2 FY26). This milestone, shared during a recent employee town hall, is credited to aggressive capacity growth, tighter cost controls, and a market share that has nearly tripled since privatization.

The 2031 Vision: Triple the Size

The airline has unveiled an ambitious growth roadmap to dominate the Indian skies by the end of the decade:

  • Fleet Expansion: Aiming to triple its fleet size to 300 aircraft by FY31, up from its current strength of over 100 jets.
  • Market Dominance: The carrier is targeting a 25% share of India’s domestic market by FY31.
  • Premium “Value-Carrier” Experience: A $70 million investment is underway to refurbish cabin interiors. This includes upgrading 26 Boeing 737 NGs and 50 Boeing 737 MAXs to offer a standardized experience that sits between low-cost and full-service models.

Strategic Rebalancing

Air India Express is shifting its focus to capture the growing demand in smaller Indian cities:

  • Domestic vs. International: The airline is moving from a 60:40 international-heavy split to an even 50:50 distribution.
  • Tier-2 & Tier-3 Focus: The core strategy involves connecting major metros to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, providing depth in domestic routes rather than just breadth.

While the broader Air India Group continues to face financial pressures—partly due to regional airspace restrictions—this operational success signals a stabilization of the low-cost unit and a “significant step forward” in Tata’s multi-billion-dollar aviation restructuring.
