In a major milestone for Pakistan’s technology sector, Apple Inc. is set to begin manufacturing and refurbishing iPhones under the proposed Mobile and Electronics Manufacturing Framework. To attract the global tech giant, the government has agreed to provide land at discounted rates and an 8% performance incentive.
Economic and Export Goals
- Projected Earnings: The project aims to generate $100 million from the export of refurbished iPhones in its very first year.
- Foreign Investment: Following MoUs signed during PM Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Beijing, Chinese firms are expected to invest $557 million in the sector.
- Localization Strategy: The new policy focuses on increasing the use of local parts in mobile phones from the current 12% to 35% within a year.
- Funding Growth: The government plans to impose an export levy on high-end phones priced above Rs 100,000 to fund future technological development.
