SSGC illegal gas pump crackdown Karachi

Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has significantly intensified its city-wide crackdown in Karachi against the illegal use of suction pumps and pressure machines. These devices, often referred to as “dangerous compressors,” are being targeted because they suck up gas pressure, depriving neighboring households of their fair share and creating serious safety hazards.

Operation Details and Penalties

The company has deployed specialized task forces from its Security Services and Counter Gas Theft Operations (SS&CGTO) wing to conduct door-to-door inspections. Key measures include:

  • Heavy Fines and Jail: Individuals caught using illegal pressure machines can face substantial fines and up to six months to five years of imprisonment under the Gas (Theft Control and Recovery) Act 2016.
  • Immediate Disconnections: SSGC teams are authorized to disconnect the gas supply of violators on the spot and confiscate the illegal equipment.
  • Criminal Arrests: Authorities are increasingly making arrests during raids, with several suspects recently taken into custody across various Karachi localities, including Malir, Korangi, and Orangi Town.
  • Explosion Risks: SSGC has repeatedly warned that these illegal pumps act as potential “bombs,” significantly increasing the risk of pipeline leaks and domestic explosions.

How to Comply and Report

To avoid strict legal action, citizens are advised to immediately remove any illegal suction devices. SSGC encourages the public to report gas theft or the use of illegal compressors through:

  • 24/7 Helpline: Call 1199.
  • WhatsApp: Send details to 0323-8213346.
  • Mobile App: Use the SSGC Customer Connect app.
