Starbucks faces an "infrastructure gap" as its fragmented supplier network struggles to match its AI-driven inventory goals.

Starbucks is currently facing a critical challenge as its “fragmented” supplier network struggles to keep pace with an increasingly complex menu. Despite rolling out advanced NomadGo AI tools to over 11,000 stores to achieve 99% inventory accuracy, the company is hitting a wall due to a lack of standardization. A major bottleneck is the patchwork of over 1,500 different cup-and-lid pairings from various regional vendors, which prevents the automation levels seen in competitors.

This “infrastructure gap” has led to frequent “out of stock” situations for essentials like milk, pastries, and lids. Internal data revealed that in early 2024, fewer than one-third of deliveries reached distribution centers on time and in full, far below the industry-standard 95% health benchmark. CEO Brian Niccol has prioritized fixing these structural weaknesses, including replacing legacy systems like the AS/400, to ensure a consistent customer experience.
