SBCA Identifies 584 Unsafe Buildings in Karachi; Commissioner Orders Evacuation of 59
KARACHI: Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi has ordered the immediate evacuation of highly dilapidated residential buildings to safeguard residents from expected monsoon rains.
The move aims to prevent loss of life and property as the city braces for heavy downpours.
Monsoon Preparedness Meeting
An important meeting chaired by Commissioner Karachi Hassan Naqvi reviewed administrative arrangements for the monsoon season.
Officials from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) provided a detailed briefing on vulnerable structures across the city.
Focus on Resident Safety
SBCA officials informed the meeting that Karachi has 584 dilapidated buildings in total.
Out of these, 59 are extremely dangerous, including 29 historical structures that require urgent attention.
The commissioner directed SBCA to issue notices immediately to occupants of these buildings.
Notices will also be publicized widely to create awareness among residents.
Hassan Naqvi emphasized that protecting human lives must remain the top priority during this critical period.
He stressed the need for swift and effective action to avoid any untoward incidents.
District-wise Distribution
District-wise data shared in the briefing revealed a heavy concentration of risky buildings in South District.
More than 90 percent of the dilapidated structures are located there, with 442 buildings identified in South District alone.
Central District follows with 73 such buildings.
East District has 16, while Korangi District reports 18 vulnerable structures.
Kemari District has 28, Malir has 5, and West District has 2 dilapidated buildings.
Evacuation and Demolition Measures
The commissioner instructed SBCA to share the list of extremely dangerous buildings with all Deputy Commissioners without delay.
The meeting also decided to proceed with demolition of these structures according to their condition.
If occupants fail to comply with notices, authorities will disconnect gas, electricity, and water connections to enforce evacuation.
These measures reflect the administration’s proactive approach toward public safety.
Residents are urged to cooperate with officials to ensure smooth implementation of the decisions.
Local authorities will monitor the situation closely in the coming days.
Further coordination with relevant departments will continue to strengthen monsoon contingency plans across Karachi.
