Pakistan’s headline consumer inflation accelerated to 11.1% year-on-year in August 2026, marking a sharp increase from 9.2% in July, according to official data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The data highlights a renewed upward trajectory in consumer prices, driven heavily by mounting pressures in rural regions where annual inflation reached 12.2% compared to 10.4% in urban centers. On a month-on-month basis, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) climbed by 1.2% in August. This acceleration aligns closely with government projections that anticipated a rate between 10% and 11% due to ongoing global energy volatility and supply-chain pressures. Economists note that this sharper-than-expected uptick complicates the macroeconomic outlook ahead of the State Bank of Pakistan's upcoming monetary policy meeting, leaving little headroom for early policy rate cuts as policymakers attempt to safeguard external stability and manage domestic purchasing power.

The latest reading marks a significant increase in inflationary pressure, with consumer prices rising 1.2% month-on-month during August. In August 2025, monthly inflation had declined by 0.6%.

Inflationary pressures were particularly strong in rural areas. Rural CPI inflation reached 12.2% year-on-year, compared with 9.9% in July, while urban inflation rose to 10.4% from 8.7% a month earlier.

The government had already anticipated higher inflation in August, projecting a rate of 10–11% amid global commodity and energy price pressures. It warned that geopolitical uncertainty and international energy prices could continue to create risks for both inflation and Pakistan’s external account.

The latest data could add pressure on policymakers as Pakistan seeks to maintain macroeconomic stability while dealing with higher global energy costs and external economic risks.
