The federal government has appointed Imran Sarwar as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) for a three-year term, effective immediately. Disclosed to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Thursday, the appointment follows the conclusion of Rehmat Ali Hasnie’s tenure on August 21, 2026, and a brief interim period under Acting President Abdul Wahid Sethi; the formal transition remains subject to the final Fit & Proper Test clearance by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). Sarwar brings over 27 years of extensive international and domestic banking experience spanning Pakistan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates, specializing in corporate, institutional, and investment banking alongside risk management, complemented by academic credentials including degrees in Business and Accounting from Ohio Wesleyan University and an LLB from the University of the Punjab.

NBP disclosed the appointment in a filing with the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Thursday. The appointment is subject to Fit & Proper Test clearance by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

Sarwar holds degrees in Business and Accounting from Ohio Wesleyan University and an LLB from the University of the Punjab. He brings more than 27 years of banking experience, covering corporate, institutional and investment banking as well as risk management. His professional experience spans Pakistan, Australia, the UK and the UAE.

The appointment follows the completion of Rehmat Ali Hasnie’s tenure on August 21, 2026. Abdul Wahid Sethi had subsequently served as NBP’s Acting President and CEO.

The leadership change comes as NBP reports strong financial results. For the first half of 2026, the bank posted Rs67.3 billion in profit before tax and Rs32.4 billion in profit after tax, with earnings per share of Rs15.23.
