Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the decision was a response to what he described as foreign interference in Israel’s affairs. The British consulate traditionally handles diplomatic and consular matters involving the Palestinian territories and is accredited to the Palestinian Authority.
The UK announced the trade restrictions on Tuesday, with Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband accusing Israeli settlers of violence and saying the measures were intended to protect the possibility of a two-state solution. The restrictions are expected to take effect within six to nine months.
France and Canada backed the British move, while a total of 12 countries are now supporting sanctions or trade restrictions targeting Israeli settlements. The measures include restrictions on goods and, in some cases, services linked to settlement activity.
Israel also announced additional measures against Britain. Saar said British participation in a US-led Gaza coordination mission would end, while certain British officials and other individuals would be barred from entering Israel.
The dispute comes as Western governments intensify criticism of Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank. The UK and other countries regard the settlements as illegal under international law, while Israel rejects that characterization and has strongly opposed foreign sanctions.
The latest measures mark another deterioration in UK-Israel relations, which have already been strained by disagreements over Gaza, settlement expansion, arms policy and the Palestinian state. The confrontation also comes ahead of Israel’s national elections scheduled for October.
