Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has officially approved the rollout of the second phase of the Punjab E-Bike Scheme, scaling up the initiative to provide more than 125,000 electric bikes to male and female students across the province. Designed to alleviate student commuting burdens while championing green mobility, the updated framework features highly subsidized financial terms: students are exempt from making a down payment, and the provincial government will absorb all interest and insurance costs. Monthly installments have been agreed in principle at approximately Rs3,000. CM Maryam Nawaz has instructed relevant departments to open the digital application portal immediately, ensuring that eligible students receive their vehicles within a tight six-week turnaround.The new batch of electric bikes will feature durable lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. To promote road safety, beneficiaries will receive complimentary helmets and safety bars alongside two days of mandatory riding training.

The government has also given in-principle approval to gradually expand the scheme beyond students to include government employees, government departments and public delivery riders.
The second phase follows the first CM Punjab E-Bike Scheme, which distributed 20,000 bikes, including electric and petrol models, in Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur and Rawalpindi. The latest phase represents a major shift towards electric two-wheelers.
The scale of the programme could significantly increase the adoption of electric motorcycles in Punjab. However, its longer-term impact will depend on factors including battery replacement, after-sales service, spare-parts availability and charging infrastructure, particularly outside major cities.
