JPMorgan Chase has officially severed its prime brokerage lending relationship with Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, following devastating portfolio losses. According to reports from the Financial Times and Reuters, JPMorgan—one of the fund's primary lenders—withdrew its financial support after the fund suffered severe blows from leveraged bets on semiconductor and artificial intelligence stocks during a sharp market sell-off.The heavy drawdowns forced Situational Awareness to liquidate the majority of its publicly traded equity portfolio to Citadel to meet margin calls. Despite losing its credit line with JPMorgan, the fund continues to maintain prime brokerage relationships with Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Bank of America, alongside newly established clearing operations with Clear Street. The high-profile margin crisis underscores the growing financial risks and systemic volatility facing highly leveraged investment strategies riding the AI and semiconductor boom.

JPMorgan Chase has ended its lending relationship with Situational Awareness, an artificial intelligence-focused hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, following substantial losses linked to its leveraged bets on AI-related stocks.

According to a report by the Financial Times, cited by Reuters, JPMorgan was among the fund’s leading lenders through its prime brokerage business. The bank informed Situational Awareness that it would stop providing lending support after the fund suffered heavy losses.

The fund was hit by a broad sell-off in global semiconductor stocks in July, which sharply affected its leveraged positions. Situational Awareness was reportedly forced to sell most of its publicly traded equity portfolio to Citadel to address the pressure created by the market decline.

The episode highlights the risks faced by investment funds that use borrowed money to increase exposure to highly volatile technology stocks. While leverage can amplify gains during a market rally, it can also accelerate losses and trigger margin calls when prices fall rapidly.

Despite JPMorgan’s decision, Situational Awareness has not lost access to the entire financial system. Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Bank of America reportedly remain active brokers for the fund, while the firm has also begun working with Clear Street.

The fund’s difficulties come amid heightened scrutiny of aggressive AI-related investment strategies. Investors have poured substantial capital into semiconductor companies, cloud-computing providers and other businesses linked to the expansion of artificial intelligence.

JPMorgan, Situational Awareness and the other institutions named in the report did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
