HBL Microfinance Bank (HBL MfB) and the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) have officially expanded their Climate-Smart Agri-Financing initiative province-wide across Punjab, integrating advanced satellite data and remote-sensing analytics into agricultural lending and risk assessment. Moving past its initial pilot phase, the collaboration harnesses SUPARCO's 35-year spatial data archives, Geo-AI machine learning models, and the Space4Climate analytical platform to deliver farm-level agronomic evaluations, hazard probability forecasts (floods, droughts, hailstorms), and post-loan monitoring.HBL MfB President and CEO Amir Khan emphasized that the technology equips the bank to make faster, more data-driven financing decisions in the face of mounting climate volatility and water stress. Meanwhile, SUPARCO Member Zafar Iqbal noted that the partnership combines national space capabilities with commercial finance to strengthen rural resilience, supported by public agricultural intelligence accessible via the Space4Climate portal.

HBL Microfinance Bank (HBL MfB) and the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) have expanded their Climate-Smart Agri-Financing initiative to farmers across Punjab, bringing satellite data and remote-sensing technology into agricultural lending and risk assessment.

The initiative has moved from a pilot phase to province-wide implementation, with Punjab selected as a key area because of its central role in Pakistan’s agricultural economy. The collaboration aims to help the bank make more informed financing decisions by using satellite-based crop monitoring, land-use data and remote-sensing analytics to assess agricultural conditions and risks.

Under the partnership, SUPARCO’s satellite and remote-sensing capabilities will complement HBL Microfinance Bank’s field presence and agricultural financing expertise. The technology is expected to support farm-level risk assessment, agronomic evaluation and post-loan monitoring, while helping strengthen the resilience of the bank’s agriculture financing portfolio.

HBL Microfinance Bank President and CEO Amir Khan said farmers are increasingly exposed to unpredictable weather, water stress and other climate-related risks that can affect their livelihoods and Pakistan’s food security.

“Our collaboration with SUPARCO allows us to bring the power of satellite intelligence into agricultural financing, helping us better understand conditions on the ground and enabling financing decisions that are more informed, timely and aligned with farmers’ realities,” Khan said.

He added that the partnership could serve as a model for bringing together technology, finance and national institutions to address challenges facing Pakistan’s agricultural sector.

SUPARCO Member (Space Application & Research Wing) Zafar Iqbal said the commission has more than 35 years of spatial data archives and experience in agricultural monitoring through satellite technology.

According to Iqbal, SUPARCO has developed machine learning and deep learning models through a Geo-AI-enabled computational platform to generate agricultural insights, while its Space4Climate initiative provides probabilistic risk assessments for hazards including floods, droughts and hailstorms.

These capabilities have been combined into an analytical engine designed to support HBL Microfinance Bank’s agricultural lending system through farm-level risk assessment, more informed lending decisions and post-loan monitoring.

SUPARCO will also facilitate public access to agricultural intelligence through its Space4Climate portal, with the aim of improving awareness and supporting greater resilience across Pakistan’s agricultural sector.

The expansion comes as climate-related risks, including extreme weather and water stress, continue to create challenges for farmers and agricultural financing. By integrating satellite intelligence into lending processes, HBL Microfinance Bank and SUPARCO are seeking to make agricultural finance more data-driven while improving risk assessment and monitoring across Punjab.
