NBP Asian Banking Finance award Infraelectric solar financing
✧ GENERATE BRIEFING

The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has been awarded the "Sustainable Infrastructure Initiative of the Year – Pakistan" at the Asian Banking & Finance (ABF) Corporate & Investment Banking Awards 2026 in Singapore. The recognition honors NBP’s leadership in structuring and arranging a Rs850 million syndicated project finance facility for Infraelectric (Pvt.) Limited (IFPL), a renewable energy solutions provider. Key transaction parameters, operational impact, and executive insights include: Islamic Financing Structure: NBP served as the lead adviser, structurer, and arranger for the Shariah-compliant facility, which funds the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across telecom tower sites operated by major infrastructure providers. Telecom Decarbonization & Operational Resilience: Mobile network towers require an uninterrupted power supply to maintain network uptime. Transitioning tower infrastructure from diesel generators and grid power to solar energy reduces long-term operational expenditures (OpEx), stabilizes energy costs, and lowers carbon emissions.

National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has won the “Sustainable Infrastructure Initiative of the Year – Pakistan” award at the Asian Banking & Finance (ABF) Corporate & Investment Banking Awards 2026 for arranging financing to support solar power installations at cellular tower sites.

The award, presented in Singapore, recognises NBP’s role in arranging a Rs850 million syndicated project finance facility for Infraelectric (Pvt.) Limited (IFPL), a renewable energy solutions provider.

Islamic Financing Structure and Technical Scope

Under the transaction, NBP provided advisory, structuring and financing support for an Islamic financing facility to install solar photovoltaic systems at telecommunications tower locations. The project aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce reliance on conventional power sources.

Cellular towers require a continuous and reliable electricity supply to maintain network connectivity. Integrating solar power into tower operations can help telecom infrastructure providers manage energy costs while supporting the transition towards cleaner energy.

Capital Mobilization for Clean Energy

The financing initiative also reflects the growing role of banks in directing capital towards renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure projects. Such arrangements can help businesses fund clean-energy investments that may otherwise require substantial upfront expenditure.

Commenting on the award, Usman Shahid, SEVP and Group Chief of NBP’s Corporate & Investment Banking Group, said the recognition reflected the bank’s role in supporting sustainable infrastructure and mobilising capital for projects with economic and environmental benefits.

NBP said it remained committed to developing financing solutions with clients and partners to support a more sustainable and resilient economy. The award places the bank’s project-finance activities in the spotlight as Pakistan seeks greater investment in renewable energy and energy-efficient infrastructure.

The transaction brings together banking, renewable energy and telecommunications infrastructure, three areas increasingly connected by efforts to reduce operating costs and carbon emissions.
