National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with PowerChina | Integrity Energy Storage (Shanghai) Technology Co. Ltd. (I²-ESS) to explore financing opportunities for renewable energy, energy storage and related industries in Pakistan.
Signed on October 12, the agreement establishes a framework for cooperation in financing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), commercial businesses and corporate clients. It also covers potential customer referrals, lead generation and cross-selling of banking products and services.
Institutional Collaboration and Green Banking Scope
Under the arrangement, the two organisations intend to connect businesses operating in renewable energy, energy storage and allied sectors with NBP’s banking and financing solutions. The collaboration is expected to help identify commercially viable projects and support businesses seeking funds for expansion.
The MoU also provides for exploring green financing opportunities, including potential projects aligned with NBP’s strategic priorities and commercial objectives. However, the agreement sets a framework for cooperation rather than committing either party to a specific financing amount or investment.
Market Positioning and Clean Energy Transition
NBP said the partnership could expand its business outreach and strengthen relationships with customers by creating opportunities to offer banking products and services to businesses introduced through the collaboration.
The agreement comes as renewable energy and energy storage gain importance in addressing electricity costs, improving energy reliability and supporting the transition towards more sustainable power systems. Financing access remains an important consideration for businesses developing projects in these sectors.
For NBP, the collaboration provides a route to explore new lending and business opportunities in energy-related industries, while I²-ESS can help connect prospective borrowers in relevant sectors with the bank’s financing services.
The parties will explore potential projects and commercial opportunities under the MoU, with any future financing arrangements dependent on project viability, due diligence and the bank’s applicable lending requirements.
