Pakistan has been nominated to chair the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2027, marking the country’s first return to the position since 1953, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said on Friday.

Multilateral Governance and Strategic Mandate
The ministry said the appointment would provide Pakistan with an opportunity to contribute to international discussions on economic policy, development financing and global financial cooperation.
The Boards of Governors are the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions. They represent member countries and deal with major institutional matters, including strategic direction and broader economic and development priorities.
Following the announcement, Cheema received a briefing from the World Bank Group’s Corporate Secretariat on the responsibilities of the chairmanship and the coordination required during Pakistan’s term.
Voice for Developing Nations
The ministry described the nomination as an important opportunity for Pakistan to participate in global economic and development deliberations at a time when multilateral institutions face growing challenges over financing, economic stability and development needs.
The appointment also offers Pakistan a platform to engage with member countries on the concerns of developing economies, including access to development finance and stronger coordination among international financial institutions.
Pakistan’s chairmanship is scheduled for 2027. The role, however, does not mean Pakistan will control the day-to-day operations or lending decisions of either institution; those responsibilities remain with their respective executive boards and management.
