Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor met representatives of Fitch Ratings to discuss Pakistan’s economic performance and sovereign credit outlook on the sidelines of the World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings 2026.

According to the Press Information Department (PID), the finance minister highlighted Pakistan’s restored access to international capital markets, fiscal consolidation and sustained primary budget surpluses during the meeting.

Macroeconomic Stability and Fiscal Buffers

The delegation also discussed inflation trends, monetary policy, exchange-rate stability and the country’s contained current account deficit. Officials highlighted reserve accumulation, reduced forward liabilities and stronger external buffers to help Pakistan withstand economic shocks.

On public finances, the Pakistani delegation pointed to improving debt sustainability, declining debt-servicing costs, longer borrowing maturities and assurances regarding bilateral financing rollovers.

Structural Reforms and Rating Upgrade Roadmap

The finance minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, implementing structural reforms and promoting export-led economic growth.

Discussions also covered Pakistan’s trade and investment engagement with the United States. Aurangzeb sought Fitch’s assessment of the requirements Pakistan would need to meet to progress towards the BB sovereign credit rating category.

A higher sovereign credit rating could improve Pakistan’s standing among international investors and potentially support access to external financing. However, progress towards a higher rating would depend on the country’s economic performance, fiscal position, external-sector strength and implementation of reforms.

The meeting forms part of Pakistan’s ongoing engagement with international credit-rating agencies as the government seeks to strengthen investor confidence and improve the country’s sovereign credit profile.
