Google Reaffirms AI Safety Commitment in Pakistan for Safer Internet Month 2026.
Google Pakistan online safety 2026
In celebration of Safer Internet Month in February 2026, Google has reaffirmed its dedication to a secure digital environment in Pakistan by introducing advanced AI-driven safety tools and expanding its educational reach. As AI becomes integral to the lives of the nation’s 128 million eligible voters and millions of students, Google is focusing on empowering parents and educators with localized safeguards and literacy programs.
Google’s Safety Initiatives in Pakistan
Google’s strategy combines “Secure by Design” technology with active educational partnerships to protect young users:
- Advanced Parental Controls: * Family Link Updates: Parents can now manage all of their children’s devices from a single consolidated page, enabling easy viewing of usage summaries and setting time limits.
- YouTube Shorts Timer: New controls allow parents to set daily limits on Shorts scrolling, with the option to set the timer to zero to prevent endless viewing.
- School Time on Android: This feature allows parents to silence and restrict apps during specific hours to ensure students stay focused in class.
- Fighting Misinformation and Deepfakes:
- Synthetic Content Detection: Tools like SynthID and “About this image” help users identify AI-generated or manipulated content.
- The SIFT Method: Google encourages the “SIFT” (Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, and Trace claims) method to help students critically evaluate online information.
- Responsible AI Literacy:
- Guided Learning in Gemini: This mode acts as an AI learning companion that asks open-ended questions to help students build a deep understanding of subjects like history or computer science, rather than just providing quick answers.
- Be Internet Awesome: This program has been expanded to teach essential AI literacy and safety skills to children, helping them become “safe, smart, and smart online”.
Commitment to Local Growth
Farhan Qureshi, Google’s Country Director for Pakistan, highlighted that these initiatives complement the company’s broader local presence, including the newly inaugurated Chromebook assembly line in Haripur. By 2026, this facility is expected to produce 500,000 secure, affordable Chromebooks annually, directly supporting the digital transformation of Pakistan’s education sector.
