A former employee of South Korean semiconductor manufacturer SK Hynix has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for leaking confidential semiconductor manufacturing technology to an unnamed Chinese firm.
The Seoul High Court upheld the initial ruling during an appeal, finding the defendant guilty of unlawfully disclosing classified trade secrets. The leak focused on CMOS image sensors—a critical non-memory semiconductor technology standard in smartphone cameras, laptop webcams, and imaging devices.
Internal Security Breach and Disclosures
According to court records, the former employee was previously stationed at SK Hynix’s regional office in China. In 2022, the individual accessed company internal servers in violation of established security protocols, printing out and photographing restricted documents containing trade secrets.
Portions of this proprietary information were subsequently embedded directly into job application materials and a résumé submitted to a prospective Chinese employer.
Court Rationale and Industry Impact
During legal proceedings, the defendant admitted to all charges. SK Hynix managed to recover the majority of the compromised files.
The conviction underscores growing geopolitical and corporate security scrutiny within the global supply chain, as South Korean memory and non-memory chipmakers face escalating competition and heightening technology-protection efforts across the region
