Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik indicated on Sunday that Pakistani consumers could receive relief in fuel prices if international crude oil rates remain stable over the coming days.
Speaking to reporters, Malik said a formal decision regarding petroleum prices is expected within the next two days, with official rates set to be calculated and determined by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).
OGRA Pricing Mechanism and Global Trends
The minister explained that OGRA determines domestic petroleum rates using a seven-day moving average of international oil prices. Consequently, any sustained stability or downward trend in global crude pricing translates directly into lower domestic retail prices.
Key highlights from the minister’s statement include:
- Global Market Context: Highlighting past volatility during the Iran-US conflict, Malik noted that high international oil prices had severely strained regional economies, leading to strict fuel rationing in several neighboring markets.
- Petroleum Levy Commitments: The government has maintained its budgetary commitments regarding the petroleum levy, ensuring it was neither increased nor reduced beyond stipulated targets.
- Energy Security: Malik emphasized the urgent need to build alternative energy security frameworks to shield Pakistan’s domestic economy from future external geopolitical shocks.
Current Domestic Fuel Rates
The potential price reduction comes as motorists across the country continue to pay elevated rates. Currently, petrol retails at Rs 327.62 per litre while high-speed diesel (HSD) stands at Rs 380.86 per litre.
Market analysts note that a drop in fuel prices would provide crucial relief to consumers and businesses alike by lowering freight and transportation costs, helping cool broader inflationary pressures across the economy.
