✧ GENERATE BRIEFING

The World Bank mobilised a record $112 billion in private capital during the fiscal year ending June 2026, marking a substantial increase from $69 billion in fiscal 2025 and more than triple the amount recorded in 2022. Combined with its own resources of $123 billion, the institution committed a total of $235 billion to development projects over the year. Spearheaded by President Ajay Banga, the bank has leveraged guarantees, streamlined loan structures, and reduced project approval timelines to attract institutional investors to developing markets. The World Bank has set an ambitious target to scale annual private capital mobilisation past $200 billion within the next two to three years to address massive financing gaps in emerging economies. Infrastructure captured roughly 40% of the total lending, while regulatory reforms accounted for 26%, supported by prominent risk-sharing projects such as a Rio Tinto lithium venture in Argentina and initiatives involving Guatemala’s Banco Industrial.

The World Bank mobilised a record $112 billion in private capital during the fiscal year ended June 2026, significantly increasing the flow of private investment into development projects in emerging and developing economies.

The latest figure compares with $69 billion in fiscal 2025 and is more than three times the amount mobilised in 2022, highlighting the World Bank’s growing focus on using private investment to supplement public development financing.

Including its own resources of $123 billion, the World Bank committed a combined $235 billion to development projects during the year. The institution has increasingly sought to use guarantees, standardised financing structures and partnerships with investors to make projects in developing economies more attractive to private capital.

Under President Ajay Banga, the World Bank has focused on reducing barriers that discourage institutional investors from entering developing markets. Measures include simplifying loan structures, reducing project approval times and strengthening cooperation with financial institutions.

The bank is targeting a further expansion in private capital mobilisation. Banga has set an objective of increasing annual private investment involvement to more than $200 billion within two to three years, as the institution seeks to close the financing gap facing developing economies.

Infrastructure remained a major area of financing, accounting for around 40% of lending, while approximately 26% went towards regulatory reforms. The World Bank said projects involving critical minerals, infrastructure and financial-sector partnerships demonstrated the potential to attract significant private investment.

Among the projects cited were a Rio Tinto lithium venture in Argentina and a bond-financed initiative involving Guatemala’s Banco Industrial, reflecting the bank’s efforts to use its financing and risk-sharing mechanisms to bring private investors into development projects.

The increase comes as developing countries face substantial financing needs for infrastructure, energy, climate resilience and job creation. Mobilising private capital alongside development-bank resources is increasingly being used to expand the amount of funding available for such projects.
