global vegetable oil prices Thomas Mielke
✧ GENERATE BRIEFING

Global vegetable oil prices could rise through 2027 due to Black Sea sunflower oil delivery bottlenecks, declining South American soyoil, and strong biofuel demand. Global vegetable oil prices face renewed upward pressure heading into late 2026 and 2027, driven by compounding supply constraints across major producing regions, according to Thomas Mielke, executive director of Hamburg-based forecaster Oil World. The projected tightening is primarily fueled by security-related shipment disruptions in the Black Sea, which could reduce monthly sunflower oil exports from Russia and Ukraine by 300,000 to 350,000 metric tonnes absent a secure maritime corridor. Compounding the shortfall, South American soyoil exports have passed their seasonal peak, while sustained global demand particularly from the biodiesel sector continues to outpace sluggish overall production growth in oils and fats.

Global vegetable oil prices are likely to rise in the coming months and into 2027 as disruptions to Black Sea sunflower oil shipments coincide with declining South American soyoil exports, according to Thomas Mielke, executive director of Hamburg-based forecaster Oil World.

Mielke warned that sunflower oil shipments from Russia and Ukraine could fall 300,000–350,000 metric tonnes below potential levels each month if safe shipping corridors remain unestablished, heavily constrained by recent regional port attacks and logistics friction.

Impact on Key Importers and Alternative Oils

  • India’s Strategic Shift: As the world’s largest edible oil importer, India faces immediate exposure. To mitigate potential shortages, India may pivot aggressively toward palm oil imports.
  • Import Duty Adjustments: Demonstrating proactive policy measures, India has already reduced its basic import duty on crude sunflower oil from 10% to zero, enhancing import competitiveness.
  • Palm Oil Substitution: With palm oil prices experiencing a favorable price correction following recent adjustments, global buyers are increasingly substituting constrained soft oils with palm oil, supporting price floors through 2027.

Underlying Market Fundamentals

Beyond geopolitical supply bottlenecks in Eastern Europe, global vegetable oil balances are tightening due to structural factors:

  • Seasonal Soyoil Decline: South American soyoil shipments have peaked for the season, restricting alternative supplies from October onward.
  • Biofuel Demand Pressure: Firm consumption from the global biodiesel and renewable energy sectors continues to absorb substantial oil volumes, straining production growth.

Implications for Domestic Markets

The shifting international landscape carries direct consequences for food-importing nations. Higher global commodity benchmarks invariably translate into elevated domestic cooking oil and ghee costs through import parity pricing, heightening food inflation risks for emerging markets like Pakistan.
