United Bank Limited (UBL) Rural Bank and Universal Agri Tractor Company (UATC), part of the G.M. Group, have signed a strategic agreement to expand access to tractor financing and promote farm mechanisation in Pakistan.
The agreement was signed at Governor House Sindh on October 5 in the presence of Sindh Governor Nehal Hashmi, senior government officials, business leaders and industry representatives.
Subsidy Architecture and Credit Delivery
Under the partnership, UBL Rural Bank will provide guarantee-based tractor financing to eligible farmers, agricultural entrepreneurs and rural customers, enabling them to acquire machinery for their farming operations.
UATC will offer an upfront markup subsidy of Rs100,000 on each financed tractor under the arrangement. The subsidy is intended to reduce financing costs for eligible buyers and make instalment payments more affordable.
UBL Rural Bank was represented at the signing ceremony by its Head of Rural Bank, Abdul Sattar Narejo, while UATC Managing Partner Zain Wahab and company owner Wahab GM represented the tractor manufacturer.
Policy Focus on Farm Productivity
Addressing the gathering, Governor Nehal Hashmi emphasised the importance of improving farmers’ access to agricultural finance and modern machinery. He said stronger cooperation between financial institutions and industrial companies could help improve agricultural productivity and support rural economic development.
Farm mechanisation can help farmers improve the timeliness of sowing and harvesting, reduce certain production costs and increase operational efficiency. However, the affordability of machinery remains a challenge for many farmers, particularly those with limited access to formal credit.
The partnership seeks to address this financing barrier by combining UBL Rural Bank’s agricultural lending capabilities with UATC’s tractor-manufacturing business. Its impact will depend on farmers’ eligibility, financing terms and the availability of suitable machinery.
The agreement reflects broader efforts to improve agricultural investment and modernise Pakistan’s farming sector, where access to affordable credit and mechanisation remains important for productivity, farm incomes and rural economic growth.
