His career spans roles at IndiGo, South African Airways, Virgin Australia's Pacific Blue, Mandala Airlines, and Air New Zealand. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has nominated Adrian Hamilton Manns, former chief executive of Oman-based SalamAir, as its next chief executive officer, with his appointment expected to take effect by the end of October, according to sources cited by Business Recorder.
The nomination is awaiting security and other required clearances, and PIA has not yet formally announced the appointment. If confirmed, Manns would become one of the first major executive appointments since an Arif Habib-led consortium assumed management control of the national carrier on June 29, 2026.
Aviation Background and Turnaround Credentials
Manns served as chief executive of SalamAir, headquartered in Muscat, from July 2024 until 2026. Before that, he was president and CEO of Kazakhstan-based FlyArystan from April 2020 to July 2024, where he oversaw the low-cost carrier’s operations and commercial development.
He also served as the founding CEO of Africa-focused low-fare airline flyafrica.com from 2012 to 2016. His earlier career includes senior commercial roles at India’s IndiGo, South African Airways, Virgin Australia’s Pacific Blue and Indonesia’s Mandala Airlines. He began his aviation career at Air New Zealand in 1997.
Manns describes himself as an airline turnaround specialist, a background that could be relevant as PIA’s new management seeks to improve the airline’s financial performance, operational efficiency and competitiveness. The national carrier has faced longstanding challenges, including financial losses, operational inefficiencies, an ageing fleet and political interference.
Commercial Model and Restructuring Outlook
The nomination follows an earlier attempt to recruit former Ethiopian Airlines chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam. That appointment did not materialise, and Air India subsequently named Gebremariam as its CEO in August 2026.
Manns’ experience has largely been with low-cost airlines, whereas PIA operates as a full-service carrier. His potential appointment will therefore be closely watched as the airline transitions to private management and seeks to strengthen its commercial and operational performance.
The final appointment remains subject to the completion of the required clearances and formal confirmation by the airline.
