Toyota Motor’s global vehicle sales and production declined for a second consecutive month in August, as weaker demand in China, the United States and the Middle East continued to weigh on the world’s largest automaker.
Toyota’s global sales, including its Lexus luxury brand, fell 6.4% year-on-year to 790,743 vehicles,1 while production declined 5.9% to 700,860 vehicles.
Key Regional Breakdown
- China: Remained a major drag on sales, with deliveries plunging 22.8% to mark the seventh consecutive monthly decline. Higher petrol prices, linked to broader energy market volatility, weighed heavily on demand for both conventional and hybrid-powered vehicles.
- United States & Middle East: Sales in the US—Toyota’s largest market—declined 4.4%, while the Middle East recorded a steep 37.5% drop.
- Japan: Served as a bright spot, posting a 9.1% increase in domestic sales driven by new model introductions.
Production Pressures
Manufacturing output faced simultaneous hurdles across key territories. Production in China fell 11.3% and US output decreased 6.6%. Domestic Japanese production slipped 1.7%, impacted in part by operational suspensions following an earthquake on the southern island of Kyushu.
The extended slump highlights the complex environment facing traditional global automakers as they navigate aggressive competition from domestic Chinese EV manufacturers alongside fluctuating fuel and operational costs.
